Preparation should start with your equipment: If you can start with new equipment, do it!. It is not that expensive and there are some diseases that you can never get rid of, so don't chance it. Make sure everything is sterile when you start. Keep your water and feed clean!

Picture 1. These waterers screw on and take any mason jar or miracle whip/mayonnaise jar. These are great for new chicks. I use one for each 25 chicks.

Picture 2. These are one gallon and screw together. I start using these at Two to Three weeks of age.

Picture 3. this is a three gallon no drowned fountain. These are good if it's hot or you have to be gone all day. you will want these by the time they are a month old.

picture 4. These are great to keep a lot off water in front of the birds. They are very awkward to use and a little heavy.

3. The Three gallon no drown.

4. This waterer takes a three or five gallon bucket. Nice for free range, you can put them anywhere.

5. This is a seven gallon fountain. hard to clean but much nicer to fill. We use these in the pens in the summer. 6. These are the feeders we will start with. plastic is easy to clean. These are the hinged type, cost about 3.50 Ea.
